This product is designed to help students learn fraud investigative techniques through a hands on experience. It takes the students through a series of steps based on an actual fictitious vendor scheme case. The students will learn many techniques that include how to use Microsoft Excel's AutoFilter Function, how to detect red flags on invoices of a fictitious vendor, and how to eventually pull together the results and present it to the client.

How it can be used:

This case simulation can be used in an internal/external auditing course, a dedicated course in fraud examination/forensic accounting, or a criminal justice course encompassing criminal investigations. By completing this case simulation, students will learn:

how vendor schemes work and how they can be detected, investigated, and prevented

the difference between a fictitious vendor scheme and a pass-through scheme

the “fraud triangle,” or the criminological theory explaining why people commit fraud

the importance of internal controls in detecting and preventing fraud, and

a general investigative approach common to all fraud examinations.
