July 2016

C. David Shepherd helped conduct market research in partnership with VCU Massey Cancer Center and was recognized at the 69th Virginia Public Relations Awards ceremony in May 2016. VCU Massey Cancer Center won the Capital Award of Merit in the Research/Evaluation category from the Richmond Chapter of Public Relations Society of America for the statewide opinion survey conducted to measure broad awareness and public opinion of the cancer center as well as willingness to donate to Massey. Congrats, Dave!

Jackie Eastman’s article, “The Impact of Extra-Relational Factors on Negotiation Strategy Expectation Violations in Ongoing Buyer-Supplier Relationships,” co-authored by Stephanie Thomas and Monique Murfield, has been accepted for presentation and to be included in the digital proceedings for the 2016 CSCMP Supply Chain Management Educators Conference this September in Orlando, FL. Congratulations, Jackie!

 

June 2016

Hyunju Shin and Bo Dai have received a 2016 Summer Travel Award from the Faculty Development Committee. They will be presenting research papers at the 2016 AMS 19th World Marketing Congress in Paris, France, from July 19–23, 2016. Hyunju will present “Customer Responses to Service Failure in Direct and Indirect Harm Context,” while Bo will present “The Evolving Patterns of the Concept of Positioning.” Congrats, Hyunju and Bo!

Brian Dowis has been selected to receive the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Accounting Association Gender Issues and Work-Life Balance Section. The award includes a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize, which will be presented at the Section’s annual business meeting on August 9, 2016, in New York City. Brian is being recognized for his exceptional contribution to scholarly research via his dissertation titled, “An Empirical Examination of Gender, Political Affiliation, and Family Composition Issues Affecting Reasonable Compensation in Closely Held Corporations.” Congratulations, Brian!

Hyunju Shin’s paper titled, “An Assessment of the Association Between Renewable Energy Utilization and Firm Financial Performance,” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Ethics. Co-authors are Alexander E. Ellinger (University of Alabama), Helenka H. Nolan (HHN Consulting), Tyler D. DeCoster (PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC) and Forrest Lane (Sam Houston State University). Congrats, Hyunju!

 

May 2016

The College of Business, along with the Centers for Teaching and Technology, co-sponsored a Flipped Learning Faculty Showcase Panel on April 21, 2016, in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center. This panel was made up of eight Georgia Southern faculty who participated in a year-long Faculty Learning Community focused on flipped learning.

Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which students focus on elements of direct instruction, developed by their professor, on the students’ own time to allow portions of class time to be utilized more for a dynamic, interactive learning environment, rather than a traditional lecture. The panel covered a variety of topics including utilizing flipped learning in everything from large introductory classes with 100+ students, to major courses and graduate level courses. Also discussed was utilizing technology and learning apps with flipped learning, how to assess learning and the impact of flipped learning and a variety of examples of how faculty can incorporate flipped learning in their classes.

Representing the College of Business on the Flipped Learning Panel was Jacqueline Eastman (Department of Marketing), who is currently the chair of the DP&T committee. The DP&T committee appreciates the Dean’s Office and college’s support in co-sponsoring this event as a teaching development activity for faculty. The event was well attended with approximately 45 guests.

Misty Loughry has been chosen as an Outstanding Reviewer for the International Journal of Conflict Management in the Emerald Literati Network 2016 Awards for Excellence for her service and significant contribution throughout 2015. She joined the journal’s editorial review board in October 2015. Congratulations, Misty!

Hyunju Shin’s paper entitled “Employing Proactive Interaction for Service Failure Prevention to Improve Customer Service Experiences,” co-authored by Alexander Ellinger, David Mothersbaugh, and Kristy Reynolds (University of Alabama), was accepted for publication in the Journal of Service Theory and Practice (Formerly Managing Service Quality: An International Journal).

Lisa Sapp, academic advisor in the Student Services Center, has been selected as a National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) National Award Winner in the Outstanding Advisor category. Congratulations, Lisa!

Bock, D.E, Eastman, J.K and K.L. Eastman, “Encouraging Consumer Charitable Behavior: The Impact of Charitable Motivations, Gratitude, and Materialism,” has been accepted to the Journal of Business Ethics. Congrats,Jackie and Kevin!

 

April 2016

David Sikora, along with his co-authors of the article, “Line Manager Implementation Perceptions as a Mediator of Relations Between High-Performance Work Practices and Employee Outcomes” in the Journal of Applied Psychology, has been named a finalist for the HR Division Scholarly Achievement Award. This award is presented to the author(s) of the most significant article in human resource management published in 2015 in recognized journals and research annuals that are generally available to HR Division members. Congratulations!

Tom Buckhoff has been selected as the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Educator of the Year. The Educator of the Year award, established in 2002, is presented to an ACFE member who has made outstanding contributions to anti-fraud education. Tom will receive the award during the ACFE global annual conference in June. Congratulations, Tom!

 

March 2016

Kwabena Boakye and Mark Hanna recently received a grant in partnership with the College of Public Health. The grant, FLEX Financial and Operational Improvement Grant, was issued by Georgia’s State Office of Rural Health. The three-year (2016-2018) grant for $510,000 is focused on helping Georgia’s Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) improve their business performance. CAHs are small, rural hospitals, and 16 CAHs from around the state are participating in the research. Kwabena and Mark will serve in the role of “lean specialists,” meaning they will conduct assessments of the operational practices of hospital administration to prepare and provide customized training in Lean/Six-Sigma methods.

The International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management recently announced its Highly Commended Papers awards for 2015. Included in this award category was Stephanie Thomas, Karl B. Manrodt and Jacqueline K. Eastman’s paper, “The Impact of Relationship History on Negotiation Strategy Expectations: A Theoretical Framework.” This article was published in Volume 45, Issue 8 of the journal. Congratulations!

Random Acts of Kindness

Two College of Business staff members were recognized on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, for their Random Acts of Kindness. Jaye Parker, administrative assistant to the associate dean, and Gordon Smith, director of graduate business programs, were recognized for showing acts of kindness on various occasions by the Georgia Southern Staff Council. The Staff Council recognized staff members who had been nominated by their peers and co-workers in conjunction with Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17, 2016.

History

“Random Acts of Kindness are those little sweet or grand lovely things we do for no reason except that, momentarily, the best of our humanity has sprung, exquisitely, into full bloom. When you perform such an act, you are doing not what life requires of you, but what the best of your human soul invites you to do. It is when we step outside the arena of the normal boundaries of our lives that our kindnesses move beyond the routine and enter the realm of the extraordinary and exquisite.” So goes the opening statement from the book, Random Acts of Kindness.

Two Faculty Members Invited to McGraw-Hill Symposium

Susan Roach and Stephanie Sipe attended the McGraw-Hill “Teach Without Limits” symposium on Amelia Island, Florida, February 4–6, 2016. The symposium brought together Introduction to Business faculty in order to benchmark and improve their respective Introduction to Business courses. Attendees were selected in recognition of best practices within the classroom.

Seventh Annual Quality Matters Conference

Jan Grimes attended the Seventh Annual Quality Matters Conference on Quality Assurance in Online Learning held in San Antonio, Texas, during November. Quality Matters (QM) is an organization that provides an internationally recognized researched-based benchmark for online course design. QM is a statewide initiative within the University System of Georgia (USG). In addition to the conference, Jan also attended a pre-conference workshop entitled, “Improving Your Online Course.” She was sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Technology (CT2) and the College of Business. While at the conference, she also got to meet and speak with John Baker, president and CEO, D2L. Brightspace by D2L is the Learning Management System (LMS) used at Georgia Southern known as Folio. She is pictured with Deborah Allen, School of Nursing, and Mr. John Baker.
