John J. Hatem is a professor of Finance in the Department of Finance and Economics at Georgia Southern University. He requests that his students: Ask questions, read with comprehension, think, use their imagination, practice, and maintain their integrity. He affirms the importance of an educated and independent-minded citizenry for the proper functioning of American society.
Recently read publications include With the Old Breed, by E. B. Sledge; Seven Last Words, by James Martin, SJ; and Superforecasting: the Art and Science of Prediction, by Philip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner.
He is currently pondering:
The relationship between forecasting and precognition;
“The paradox of education is precisely this – that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated” as stated by James Baldwin in a 1963 speech entitled, “A Talk to Teachers”;
The connection between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA in the origins of cancer;
The juxtaposition of Daniel 5:27, “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” and Wislawa Szymborska’s statement: “We know ourselves only insofar as we have been tested.”
