What is the Course of Study for a Management Major?

Overall, you will study and experience the most critical issues all modern organizations face: ethics, diversity, globalization, social-cultural trends, and environmental stewardship. Study areas focus on:

The Business Core
You will build your conceptual and technical foundations of business knowledge, developing a working knowledge of accounting, economics, finance, information systems, marketing, and quantitative analysis.

People, Groups, and Organizations
You will build knowledge and skills in leadership, strategic planning, organizing and operations, human resource management, interpersonal and group interaction, teamwork and team management, problem-solving, information technology, and quality control—all of which are needed for success in managing an organization of any type.

Should an Emphasis Area Be Selected?

As a management major, you may select among these options to tailor a program of study to fit your career goals:

Human Resource Management (HRM)
This option will prepare you for a career focused on the most important resources of any organization—its people. Your advantage will be studying in the only HRM college program in this region that emphasizes the use of human resource information system (HRIS) software. Through this course, you will learn the technology that now is at the fingertips of all successful managers of HR. In all, the HRM option prepares you to manage the entire HRM function from job planning through member retirement. For example, you will complete individual courses in staffing, training, and developing employees, as well as specialized courses in compensation and benefits. Additionally, you may study management-labor relations.

Entrepreneurship/Small Business
You should choose this option if you are motivated to manage or start your own business. Courses in this option focus both on small business management and start-up entrepreneurship. Through one course you will gain practical first-hand experience in consulting with a regional small business. In addition, this option offers you a career advantage through its focus on preparing you for assuming total financial responsibility for your firm. Upon graduation, you will have the necessary knowledge to ensure profitability for your firm.

Or, if you prefer to customize a program of study to meet your particular career goals and needs, you may enroll in the general management program.

Management Without an Emphasis
This is the most flexible option. Often, students choose this option when they want to start their careers in a management train-in program or to prepare for a career in any type of organization from large to small, from non-profit to government to industrial, commercial, religious, or healthcare. Indeed, this option provides you with an undergraduate program of study very similar to a typical MBA curriculum. In addition, you may complete an internship to gain valuable work experience and credit for an elective course.
