| What is Logistics & Intermodal Transportation? Logistics and Intermodal Transportation (LIT) is one of Georgia Southern’s fastest growing majors. It serves the needs of a dynamic industry. Logistics is ensuring the availability of the right product, in the right quantity and the right condition, at the right place, at the right time, for the right customer, at the right cost. Intermodal transportation is combining the cost and/or service advantages of more than one mode of transportation in an efficient, seamless product movement. Why Major in Logistics & Intermodal Transportation? Logistics and transportation provide a wide range of exciting career opportunities. Georgia Southern's major in logistics and intermodal transportation prepares students for the many jobs available in this challenging and rapidly expanding field with a focused, career-oriented program in the College of Business Administration. Graduates earn the Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA), with a major in logistics and intermodal transportation. What is the Course of Study for a Logistics & Intermodal Transportation Major? Upon completion of the general education requirements of the University System, students complete courses that provide a background in business and the LIT major. The basic LIT courses focus on logistics and transportation concepts and principles. Advanced courses focus on logistics operations, international issues, and intermodal transportation. Scholarships & Financial Aid Georgia Southern offers a comprehensive financial aid program for its students. In addition, industry-sponsored scholarships are available to LIT students. Each year, more than $15,000 is distributed to top students on the basis of classroom performance, professional potential, and financial need. Financial support for the scholarship program is provided by the Georgia Ports Authority, South Atlantic & Caribbean Ports Association, Propeller Club, Port of Savannah, Savannah Maritime Association, Georgia Foreign Trade Conference, Savannah Traffic Club, Hub City Atlanta, Atlanta Transportation Club, and the Cargo Association of Atlanta. Business Involvement Logistics industry professionals from a wide range of firms and agencies are periodically invited to campus for a variety of functions that directly involve students. The program is also supported by logistics professionals throughout the industry who contribute to the scholarship and endowment funds. Career Placement National, regional, and local organizations interview students on the Georgia Southern campus. Career opportunities and interviews are coordinated through the Career Services Office. Students may also receive help in writing résumés, exploring career alternatives within the LIT major, and organizing job searches in the Student Services Center. Internships The LIT program offers a supervised internship program in which students can earn academic credit and gain professional experience in a structured work setting. Student eligibility is based upon grade-point average and other criteria and selection by the host organization. Off-Campus Learning Student
field trips are a unique feature of the LIT program. Recent tours have
included visits to the Georgia Ports Authority, Wal-Mart Distribution
Center, and The Home Depot Distribution Center. The LIT program also benefits
from its relationship with a number of industry organizations. Each year,
students are selected to participate in national and regional conferences
and meetings. Established in 1940, Delta Nu Alpha, an international logistics and transportation association, is a driving force in transportation education and has chapters throughout the United States. Georgia Southern student members participate in monthly chapter meetings, attend regional functions in Atlanta, and take periodic field trips to keep abreast of current issues in the profession. The Georgia Southern chapter has received the Student Chapter of the Year award for six of the last seven years at the annual DNA Transportation Education Conference. No other student chapter has equaled this record of excellence in the entire history of the organization. Professional
Certification Southern Center for Logistics & Intermodal Transportation The Southern Center for Logistics & Intermodal Transportation provides applied research and service support in concordance with Georgia Southern's regional mission. Our faculty members are actively engaged in research and consulting from regional to Fortune 500 companies in the discipline and are sought-after speakers at academic and professional meetings. Recent activities have focused on management development programs and a study of logistics career issues.
