Week of May 18 – 23 Keeping you connected to COBA & CIT! |
|
1. And they’re off! No, I am not referring to Rachel Alexandra and the horses in last Saturday’s Preakness race. I’m talking about summer Term A classes that started this past Monday. We had a busy time early in the week helping students find classrooms, sorting out a double booking (two different classes scheduled in the same classroom at the same time), adding students to classes, and adjudicating requests from students seeking special permissions. Mary Hazeldine, Susan Williams, and all department chairs worked overtime this week to handle the previous situations and now – finally – summer school feels as if it is settling into a routine. No word yet on actual enrollment other than to say that we continue to track well ahead of point-in-time figures from a year ago. |

2. Kiplinger’s Magazine Kiplinger’s Magazine has feature called “Reader's Choice” that it describes as “a periodic report in which we showcase our readers’ top choices among Kiplinger’s 100 best values in public colleges and universities.”
This month they featured Georgia Southern University and one of our spring graduates, Clay Turner who earned his BBA degree in marketing. Click on the link below to read Clay’s wonderful descriptions of Georgia Southern (and Trey Denton's class)! http://www.kiplinger.com/features/archives/2009/05/Readers_Choice_Georgia_Southern_University.html |

3. SOAR I would like to thank Susan Williams and our folks in the CIT and the COBA Student Services Centers – Kim Robinson, Bobbie Williams, Rashonda Bostic, Abby Lynes, Heather Worley, Shantrell Wilson, Diane Reed, and Caroline Brewton – who work very hard to make all the summer SOAR sessions a success. SOAR stands for Student Orientation And Registration and is designed to facilitate the transition of entering freshmen and transfer students to Georgia Southern. There are over 15 SOAR sessions scheduled each summer and our team turns out for each and every one, including the first one last Saturday. Faculty and department chairs also participate in these sessions. Thank you all for the frontline work you do on behalf of CIT and COBA! ++++++++++++++ Also helping with SOAR throughout the summer are students who serve as “SOAR leaders.” Many apply for these positions, but few are chosen. I am delighted to introduce Justin Knight who is the CIT SOAR leader and Tavia Thurmond and Meghan Jeffrey who are assigned to COBA. ++++++++++++++ Speaking of last Saturday’s SOAR session, we invite parents to join the weekly Update as subscribers, so I am pleased to welcome the following: Thelma Plut Cindy Wrye Douglas and LaQuita Herrin Cynthia Hodges Randy Trowell Carolyn and Jamie Williamson Brigid Barker Debbie Deal Janice and David Hatcher Lori Day Joseph Leath Deborah and John Hartman Grace Tippit Missy and Steve Korwan |

4. Making news!! (thanks to Paul Floeckher and Christian Flatham for making this happen) If you have been reading the Update lately you may remember seeing references to an upcoming Fraud and Forensic Accounting Conference to be held next week in Atlanta and co-sponsored by our Center for Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business. Don Berecz, center director, has taken the lead in organizing and helping promote this event. His efforts paid off as the Atlanta Journal Constitution interviewed Don for an article that will appear in this Sunday’s edition of the AJC. Our folks over in Marketing and Communication picked up the website link today and passed it along. Click on the link below to read Don’s interview. 5. ADP conversion Faculty and staff – please pay attention to the email that came out Friday afternoon from Paul Michaud, director of human resources, concerning the ADP project. The University system is consolidating all payroll operations with ADP. As a result, we all have to “sign up” with ADP in order to get paid, starting with the new fiscal year. If you don’t sign up, you won’t get paid in July, so please re-read Paul’s instructions for doing so. ++++++++++++++ |

6. Welcome new subscribers § Desha Luke (’93 BBA in finance with an emphasis in risk management and insurance), who works with AIG in Atlanta. § Nicole (Rushing) Guarino, who works with State Farm Insurance. § Elora Knaebel, Osama Afridi, Renee Dickerson, Sammie Foss, Ciara Lewis, and Justin Williams – students from the SOAR session. § Timothy A.
