Week of May 4 – 9  Keeping you connected to COBA & CIT!

1.           Graduation Saturday

Saturday morning in Paulsen Stadium we will assemble and conduct the annual spring graduation ceremony.  It promises to be a happy, hot, and momentous occasion for the graduates and their families.  Congratulations to all!

The event will also mark the first time Freedom, Georgia Southern’s eagle mascot, will fly (untethered!) in a large outdoor setting.  We all hope he finds Steve Hein at the opposite end of the field and doesn’t decide to go exploring!

As is custom, I have included the following data comparing last year’s numbers with this year’s.  As you can see we are up significantly in overall number of graduates.

After the commencement exercises we are hosting a reception for grads and their families in the atrium of the CIT building.  We will supply food and refreshments, and faculty will be there to congratulate their students.  And I am sure there will be many pictures taken with everyone in academic regalia.

I would like to thank all faculty and staff who participated in graduation this year.  A special thanks goes out to the following folks who worked so hard on the reception:

Linda Carwell

Lisa Williams

Jamie Lane

Caroline Brewton

Donna Orme

Amirali Nathoo

Well done!

2.               ComputerWorld interview

New or used?  In mid-April Timur Mirzoev was interviewed by ComputerWorld, which was doing an article about companies and universities that purchased used computing equipment rather than new machines.

We – the College of IT – recently received a bunch of equipment from Canvas Systems, compliments of Timur’s efforts.  In the article, Timur said:

“It's also been a great teaching aide for students, who have done all of the actual installation, configuration and management of the used gear over the past four months.”

 3.        Savannah Morning News

I will report on Michael Reksulak’s latest column in next week’s Update.

  4.       Guest speakers

Luke Pittaway was the featured speaker at the April Small Business Coalition Partners meeting in Beaufort, South Carolina.  The Small Business Coalition Partners is sponsored by the Technical College of the Low Country.

Luke offered a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities that are present in a rural setting and compared the challenges the Lowcountry faces with similar ones he encountered in the United Kingdom.

Good show, Luke!

 5.        Student projects in the community

COBA and CIT faculty often engage students in projects for local companies as part of the course requirements.  Jim Randall has been doing this for years in his strategic marketing management classes.  Here is a brief summary of the ones he supervised this spring:

In Savannah, the students from Savannah conducted mystery shopping visits to the Chu Convenience Stores in preparation for developing marketing plans.  Rick Pruden, Chief Financial Office of Chu's visited the class earlier this semester to brief the class on convenience store operations.  We are presenting marketing plans to him and John Hubert, the chief operating officer, Monday evening (April 20).

In Statesboro, I have a group developing marketing plans for the Bulloch Pediatrics Group.  Doctors Michelle Zeanah and Austin Whitlock met with the students earlier in the semester.  They are presenting marketing plans to the group Friday evening (April 24) in COBA.

Also, I have groups assigned to help develop marketing plans for Eagle Inkjet and Toner.  The owner Scott Hosick met groups of students that visited his store.  They are presenting marketing plans to him Monday evening (April 27) in COBA.

Good work, Jim!

 7.        Student, faculty, and alumni successes

Last week I mentioned that Greg Brock was honored recently with a Fulbright Scholar award to teach economics in Mexico.  Our local newspaper, the Statesboro Herald, ran a nice feature about him; check out the link below:

Bob (“Mr. LEGO”) Cook received some good news recently from Debra Smith of the LEGO company.  Her letter to him reads:

“Congratulations!  Your activity ‘Conducting an Experiment’ was selected as the March winner of our LEGO Smart Creativity Contest!

Your ingenuity of using LEGO bricks to encourage science exploration was viewed as a ‘great way to incorporate science into an activity that engaged young minds’ by our panel of judges.  Very innovative and exactly the type of activity we want to share with educators across the nation.

Dena Hale also has some good news to share.  She has been working with the POGIL Project, an NSF grant-funded project, to disseminate the POGIL technique across campus and the Southeast Region of the U.S.   She submitted a grant proposal that was funded!

Congratulations!  The POGIL Project has funded your project, Cross-Disciplinary Applications: Taking the Next Step.  The funding will officially begin on May 1, 2009.  The reviewers of your proposal noted that it is likely to have a lasting impact and will further the goals of the National Project.

Way to go, Dena!
