Displacement Board Co is a student led startup initiative creating custom long-boards in the Business Innovation Group’s FabLab for all types of rides.

My name is Evan Duffield, I am mechanical engineering student at Georgia Southern University. I am the president of SAE Eagle Motorsports here on campus, as well as an avid long boarder. I got into long boarding only a few years ago when I first came to Georgia Southern. Long boarding was more than a passion for me. It became an emotional refuge during times of turmoil. No matter what happened in my personal life, no matter what happened within my school curriculum, and no matter what happened within my professional life, I could always grab my board and some ear buds, and go for a ride. I used to stay up until 3,4, even 5 A.M riding around campus on my board, just listening to music.
This past summer, my friends and I decided to form a long board company. We were tired of having to buy our boards only to have them de-laminate, get run over by campus transportation, or just not be a suitable board for multiple applications. We decided to change that. We set to work designing iterations of a long board that would be suitable for downhill, freestyle, cruising, and even dancing. Coming from a background of automotive racing and advanced materials research at Georgia Southern, I submitted the idea that we could manufacture these long boards out of waste composite materials. So, I set to work emailing nearly every composite company in the world asking for donations of waste materials, or material that wouldn’t get utilized. Within one month, I had gotten nearly 1000lbs of donated material delivered to a small duplex in Statesboro, Georgia. By the time the summer had ended, and I was back at Georgia Southern, we were ready to begin manufacturing.
I had heard of the Georgia Southern University Fab Lab before, and decided that they might have some tools that I could use to get the long board business up and running. After a brief tour of the Fab Lab, I had met a variety of people from the Business Innovation Group that were all extremely kind and willing to help. We set to work at the Fab Lab, making boards with different molds, varying layups, and myriad techniques. Today, we are nearing the launch of our first official long board deck from Displacement Board Company. Our goal for the future is to constantly adapt to the riders needs. It is my belief that we are not just making long boards for people who enjoy riding, we are making creative outlets for the people that need a way to escape the trials of everyday life.
The Business Innovation Group is helping me immensely to meet my goals by providing a space to work in, connections to further develop my company, knowledgeable advice from outstanding faculty, and various opportunities to present my ideas among other innovators. I am extremely grateful for the Business Innovation Group, and their desire to assist me in my company in our journey towards success!
